What is a pressure relief cushion?

A pressure relief cushion, also known as an air cushion and or gel cushion, are specially designed seat pads, which reduce pressure on vulnerable points of the body to prevent pressure sores and ulcers. If you spend long periods of time sitting in the same position, for example, you use a wheelchair, there is a risk of sores forming on the pressure points, which are found in the buttocks, on the backs of the thighs and on the back. Using an alternating air cushion for wheelchair patients or gel cushion will help to relieve pressure from these areas, increasing comfort and minimising the risk of sores.

What’s the best support cushion for the elderly?

Elderly people often have restricted mobility, and this can mean that they spend long periods of time sitting down. Using a support cushion can help to promote comfort, at the same time as preventing pressure sores. We stock a wide range of pressure cushions for the elderly, including the Conform cushion, the Sedens 500 seat cushion, and the Stryker Sofcare chair cushion. It’s difficult to say which options are the best support cushions for the elderly, as every individual is different. If you are looking for advice or more information to help you choose the right seat pad for yourself, for a loved one or for a clinical care setting, our dedicated staff team will be happy to help.

    How do air cushions work?

Air cushions are designed to relieve and reduce pressure by redistributing weight and creating a comfortable surface on which to sit. The Conform Cushion, for example, uses advanced technology to recreate a surface that is similar to water, providing optimum comfort and alleviating pain and pressure. In addition to distributing weight evenly to relieve pressure points, air cushions also adapt to the natural contours of the body.

What is the best wheelchair cushion?

Sitting down in a wheelchair for a long period of time can elevate the risk of pressure sores, so it’s beneficial to invest in a wheelchair cushion. At O’Flynn Medical, we have a selection of wheelchair cushions available, including an alternating air cushion for a wheelchair. Our collection includes the Conform Cushion and the Sedens 500 Cushion. These products are proven to offer high levels of support, while the SofCare Chair Cushion provides lower level of support for shorter periods of use. We also sell gel cushions for the elderly and wheelchair users. These are ideal for general seating, as well as for wheelchairs. If you’d like more information about the specific products, or you’re unsure which option is best for you, don’t hesitate to get in touch.

How often should a wheelchair cushion be replaced?

Our wheelchair cushions are built to last, but they won’t provide a suitable level of support forever. We usually recommend replacing wheelchair cushions every 3 years, but if you notice any signs of wear or tear or damage, it may be best to buy a new one slightly earlier.
